Are you planning on building a rear extension? Is it going to have a flat roof? Why not give Green Roofs a thought!
Green roofs are an innovative idea whereby the original and natural vegetated footprint of the property is reestablished via the roof. This practice means that the roof will become a natural and operating part of the building. Not only that, but it will naturally convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, it will also act to collect water that will firstly replenish the vegetated roof, and can then be recycled into the water management system if chosen, or discharged via the drains.
This practice means that the once natural forests and agricultural land that existed prior to development can once again in essence be returned to their original state, replaced the conventional impervious surfaces that the necessary urban development has produced.
Green roofs are an excellent option in the commercial sector, this is based on their design, in that the vast majority of them have flat roofs. You may have seen these popping up in newer builds, not only are they a visual gem, but also significantly increase the building’s GREEN credentials.
Do bear in mind that this will only work with Flat Roofs, if you’re planning on having a conventional roof, you’ll be likely to encounter a bit of a maintenance issue! Pitched roofs are also not designed to support people walking on them, which would be needed to tend to the garden.
If you are planning on an extension, don’t forget you will need to adhere and abide by the Party Wall Surveying procedures, so be sure to speak with an experienced and qualified Surveyor in advance of getting the works underway!
