The Charm of Victorian Homes

Victorian homes remain a prominent feature of Britain’s housing landscape and make up much of our property stock.

Much of Britain’s population still lives in properties built during the reign of Queen Victoria, from 1837 to 1901.

During her reign, Queen Victoria oversaw an unprecedented construction boom. This resulted in more than six million homes.

Many of these homes still stand today, having since been developed, extended and renovated to meet the modern standard of living we are all accustomed to.

The growth in housing during her 64-year reign was largely due to societal changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution.

At this time, Britain shifted from a rural, agriculture-based economy to an urban and industrialised one. Cities across Britain grew rapidly, and nowhere more so than London. By the end of 1851, London was home to nearly half of Britain’s population and continued to grow.

The terraced house became the typical urban home in London, offering comfort and practicality to working families. These homes quickly evolved into close-knit communities, as occupants and neighbours often shared similar backgrounds and ambitions.

Unlike today’s construction, Victorian-era buildings used materials such as brick, stone and cast iron. These offered ease of construction and a lifespan far beyond what could have been expected at the time.

Since then, Victorian homes have stood the test of time, with their distinctive features becoming a staple of British design that remains highly sought after today.

Features such as high ceilings and large windows allow natural light to fill the home and create a sense of space. This makes living in Victorian homes different from many modern alternatives. These features also make them easy to modernise without compromising their original charm.

Over the years, our surveying team has completed countless Level 2 surveys and Level 3 surveys on both modernised and unmodernised Victorian properties. We have seen homes that have been carefully maintained and others that have not.

With all of our surveys, we leave no stone unturned. We make sure our clients have all the facts they need as part of their property purchase journey.
