In this blog we shall run over the cost effectiveness of loft insulation, whilst answering a number of questions you may have in regard to this form of energy saving material.

Where can I get purchase loft insulation?

Loft insulation comes in a wide variety of highly available materials which is widely available at many DIY stores for relatively cheap prices.

You could also contact a local insulation installer and take advantage of government grants; the government offers these grants to help the country meet its carbon reduction targets, as loft which are fitted with insulation generally produce lower carbon emissions than homes that do not!

How does loft insulation work and what is it made of?

Loft insulation works by creating a barrier of hot air which rises from the lower levels of the house. In an uninsulated home this hot air would escape through the roof, however homes containing loft insulation retain a great deal of this hot air.

Most loft insulation materials are made from mineral wool or natural wool and should be at least 270mm thick. Occasionally a light mineral wool and cellulose mix is blown into your loft, although this is known to be messy! Otherwise you can buy boards of polythene which can be fitted between the floor joists.

How will loft insulation benefit my home?

Installing insulation in your loft can benefit you financially as well as improve your homes energy performance:

As mentioned earlier in this blog, insulation will prevent up to half of the heat generated in your home from disappearing through the roof.

You can save up to £10 per month by simply installing a few rolls of loft insulation

You will lower your homes carbon footprint, saving the environment.
It reduced noise disturbances from outdoors.

Your homes Energy Performance Certificate will be vastly improved which will increase the value of your home.

Can I install loft insulation myself?

If you wished to you could install loft insulation by yourself, but before you begin DIY installation you may want to ask yourself:

Is my loft easy to access?

Does my loft have any damp problems?

My roof isn’t flat?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then it is probably best that you have a professional come and take a look at your loft, as a DIY installation could prove difficult, or a more complex insulation system may be needed.

How much can I expect to pay for loft insulation?

Installation costs tend to vary depending on the contractor you decide to use, and may be more expensive around London. The table below displays cost information gathered from England, Scotland and Wales as a collective average:

  • £200 Detached house
  • £240 Semi detached house
  • £140 Mid terrace house
  • £140 Detached bungalow
  • £350 Detached house
  • £300 Semi detached house
  • £285 Mid terrace house
  • £350 Detached bungalow

It’s a no brainer! Within the first two years it would have paid for itself and will soon start saving you money! Get installing now!
